low carbon business

WINNERS OF THE LOW CARBON BUSINESS CATEGORY WERE BECTON, DICKINSON LIMITED

Becton, Dickinson (BD) is a very large, energy intensive manufacturer producing 40 million units of products per week. It now employs a full-time energy engineer whose job it is to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

To date their figures show they have saved 1,345 tonnes of CO2 in 12 months and now aim to reduce their electricity consumption by 4 – 5% in the next 12 months and then another 2% every year thereafter.

The judges were particularly impressed with the commitment of the staff and the culture change that has been achieved throughout the organisation. They also recognised the desire with BD Plymouth to promote its efforts and see them replicated in their other sites in the UK and abroad. The judges commented that it is often underestimated how hard small changes are “won” and sustained in a very large business, so to both implement and sustain change over a relatively short period of time is commendable.
