Environmental Champion

Nicky Scott

My name is Clare Moakes and I work for the Environment Agency and am also a Director of DEBI.  I have nominated Nicky Scott as Environmental Champion because……..

As co–founder of Proper Job and co-ordinator of Devon Community Composting Network,  Nicky is dedicated to the environment and to the people he works with.

He is a leading national expert on composting. He is widely respected and known as Devon’s Compost Doctor.  He is responsible for establishing and developing many successful community composting projects in Devon and the UK.  His knowledge and enthusiasm for recycling and composting is always in demand.

Nicky has turned Proper Job into one of the most successful not for profit community composting and recycling organisations in the Devon.

It is a nationally recognised good practice demonstration site for composting recycling and reuse.

Proper Job provides a valuable service to the community and aims to increase public awareness about the need to conserve resources and reduce waste.
If you go along to Chagford you will find a mixture of delights……..

- compost for sale
- a furniture reuse and repair centre
- a paint recycling point
- veggies growing

and if you want a good read or something new to wear you can go to their book store or clothing boutique.

They also have an education and training centre and a fantastic community café called the Courtyard based in Chagford.

Reusing goods is important and should be considered before recycling and throwing waste away.

Composting is an easy way of recycling organic waste. It is a valuable way of managing and diverting waste from landfill.

Nicky is also working with the Devon Local Authorities and Environment Agency on a waste education programme for schools in Devon.   He can be frequently found talking to school children in Devon about composting and the 3Rs Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  He has also written three practical books on how to compost and recycle.

He has advised Government Ministers and the Environment Agency on the benefits of community composting and helped to shape and influence environmental legislation affecting composting.

He is an inspiration and living proof that the environment and social well being can be at the heart of running a successful business.

The one thing that stands out about Nicky is his ability to empower people to take action and make them realise that doing their little bit for the environment can really make a difference.

I am really pleased he has won this award and hope his enthusiasm for composting and recycling continues to touch and change the lives of many more people.
