MAIN AWARD WINNER AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM CATEGORY WINNER FOR THE 2007 DEBI ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS WERE HIGHER WISCOMBE

From the outset the goal of the owners of Higher Wiscombe was to provide a high quality self-catering holiday experience whilst achieving minimal environmental impact. Everything from the conversion of the barns to the day-to-day running of the business has been carried out with the utmost regard for sustainability: local people are employed, local produce procured, waste recycled and vehicles shared.

This year has seen the launch of the ‘picnic wheelbarrow’ an attempt to keep visitors on site (thereby foregoing the need to travel by car) and enjoy the farm’s acclaimed wildlife.

The conversion of the barns to self-catering accommodation involved as much reclaimed materials (sourced locally) as possible and a range of low environmental impact initiatives such as a biodigestor waste water system; underfloor heating; condensing boilers; extra thick insulation; low water volume toilets and taps and low energy bulbs.

In addition to the above the judges were particularly impressed with the commitment of the owners to share their knowledge and experience with others and DEBI are delighted to announce that they are the overall winner of the 2007 awards.
