WINNERS OF THE GREENING DEVON CATEGORY WERE:-

Co Cars – Exeter

Transport in Devon is extremely reliant on cars and, paradoxically a car club actually removes cars from the road.  Co-Cars Ltd is a not-for-profit social enterprise who offer a great way of using a car without having to own one!   It's estimated that each car club car removes five cars, freeing up car parking spaces and roads.   Once people join the club and free themselves from the burden of car ownership (or at least second car ownership) they find that they are making fewer journeys by car anyway.  They walk more, take public transport or use a bike.  The judges were really impressed that Co Cars are taking on this really difficult area of changing people's mindset towards ownership. Car owners love the freedom to be able to go anywhere at a moments' notice but that freedom does come at a cost; to the environment in terms of parking spaces, congestion and C02 emissions, and of course the cost of maintaining a vehicle.

Co Car club membership is free and users only pay for the number of hours they use the car and a mileage charge, everything else including fuel and insurance etc is covered by them.  Co Cars are actively pursuing more members and networking with other car clubs, to make theirs and other car clubs even more effective.
