Climate Change Innovation Winner 2010

WINNERS OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE INNOVATION CATEGORY WERE:

SOUTH WEST WATER, EXETER

SWW-1 SWW-2 SWW-3

South West Water have been taking their carbon management very seriously involving staff and improving their energy efficiency with their successful energy "Megawatt Challenge" and "Power Down" campaigns. They have been encouraging staff to look at energy consumption in their homes as well as in their everyday business activities. Staff have been encouraged to come forward with energy efficiency ideas and have also taken part in 'Drive Sense', a course teaching the staff how to drive more efficiently to help reduce their fuel consumption using an eco driving tool.

The 'Upstream Thinking' project is an exciting, innovative and unique project to rewet up to 4000ha of the upland mires of Exmoor and Dartmoor, helping to manage water flows before they reach reservoirs and water treatment works. The rewetting of the moors helps contain the carbon dioxide locked in the peat and promotes the growth of sphagnum moss, which retains the water and contributes to additional peat creation. This is a completely sustainable form of carbon capture and storage. Upstream Thinking enables more climate change resilient water management across parts of Devon. South West Water are showing a holistic understanding of climate change and the impacts it will have across their business. Having shared the learning of this project with the water industry, this concept is now being replicated by other water companies in the UK.
