WINNERS OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVON CATEGORY WERE:

YARDE ORCHARD, NR TORRINGTON

Yarde-big-yurt Yarde-bunkhouse Yarde-solar-panel

Yarde Orchard provides an excellent example of making the optimum use of your local resources. Within a small site alongside the Tarka Trail, they have restored redundant buildings to create a café, bunkhouse and camping area that draw on the potential of the Trail. The site uses the power of the sun for heating water and pumping water, harvests rain for washing, toilets and hot water. Wood is coppiced from the trail for cooking, space and water heating. The judges were impressed by the way local producers and culture are drawn upon to provide visitors with a distinctive experience of Devon. Through verbal and written communication visitors are made aware of how their impact has been managed and experience enhanced. The introduction of events based on the area's culture and locally sourced food is helping to build connections to the local community, providing a feel good factor for all.
