Higher Wiscombe

higher1In July had an excellent summer barbecue with the 2007 Overall DEBI award winners, Higher Wiscombe Holiday cottages.  Our host, Alistair Handyside, gave DEBI’s corporate supporters, members and guests a tour of the property and explained how they aim to provide their guests with the highest quality, sustainable tourism experience.

Higher Wiscombe boasts beautiful countryside views and is in the heart of East Devon’s area of outstanding natural beauty.  DEBI were lucky to be able to view the Old Winery barn which with 10 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms can accommodate up to 20 people.  Alistair explained that many years ago apple wine was made in this building which apparently had a rather interesting taste!

Alistair explained, “Communication is key in reducing the environmental impact of our guests. In a subtle way we want to educate the guests that stay with us.  We offer a full range of recycling facilities and what we try to do is communicate our passion for the environment to them, so that they can help us reduce their impact on Devon’s environment”.

The evening was rounded off by a superb barbecue made up from locally sourced food and drink.  DEBI is very grateful to the hospitality shown by Alistair Handyside and his family on the evening and for a most enjoyable and interesting evening.

One of the attendees wrote to DEBI and said “I wanted to thank you for hosting a really interesting visit to see what’s been achieved at Higher Wiscombe.  Clearly Higher Wiscombe were well deserved overall winners at the last DEBI Awards. I hope that guests to Higher Wiscombe continue to appreciate and respond to the highest environmental standards they are achieving in such a beautiful and peaceful place”.
