Exe Estuary Trail

DEBI’s first cycle ride for corporate supporters, members and DEBI directors took place on the recently constructed section of the Exe Estuary Trail from Exmouth to Lympstone.  The evening was hosted by past DEBI Chairman Peter Grainger from Sustrans, the organisation responsible for the facilitation of the national cycle network and from Anjumn Kanani Devon County Council who built this section of the Exe Estuary Cycle trail.

The ride started at Exmouth Railway Station and continued on the 2 mile route to Lympstone. The route follows the line of the railway line and provides wonderful views of the Exe estuary. During our cycle along the route Peter and Anjumn explained the issues that arose during the planning and construction of the cycle path.

Interpretation boards and marker posts are provided along the route to point out items of interest and details of the abundant wildlife that can be seen.  About half way along the 2 mile route an impressive 354 metre long 3 metre wide boardwalk has been constructed which carries the route over a low laying marshy and tidal area.

Once at Lympstone refreshments were taken at the Swan Inn before the cycle back to Exmouth and we were given an up-date on progress of the construction and planning of further section of the cycle trail from Lympstone to Topsham and the joining of existing cycle routes into Exeter.

This cycle route was seen to be well used by people cycling to and from work, families on an evening out cycling together with many walkers and runners.  DEBI is very grateful to Peter and Anjumn for providing an excellent and informative evening’.
