Skern Lodge
DEBI’s 2009 series of industry visits continued in August with an evening spent at Skern Lodge, near Bideford. Skern Lodge is an outdoor adventure and activity centre, who were finalists in the 2008 DEBI awards. Owner Barry Kaufman-Hill and Sarah Rigby the company’s environment manager were very keen to show us all the excellent facilities they have on site and the environmental initiatives they have developed together with their future plans for continued improvements.
The 24 DEBI supporters and members, many with their families, attended and were given a very warm welcome. Whilst the children in the party were entertained by a quiz and a visit to the assault course, the adults were shown around the site where various features were highlighted such as the solar heated hot water system, the waste management initiative in place and their new wind turbines which are currently being installed to provide electricity for the site.
The children and adults joined together to sample a number of the activities which included archery, negotiating the high ropes course and using the climbing wall. Safety is always an issue when using the above equipment but the highly trained resident instructors were always on hand to ensure everyone had a safe and enjoyable time.
Following the activities the hungry group were treated to a wonderful supper prepared by the on-site catering team.
DEBI are very grateful to Barry and Sarah for a really excellent evening at Skern Lodge.
